While the brunt of “The Editor Strikes Back” is made up of Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, there is still a ton of completely excised material, including several subplots and supporting characters.
As non-Star Wars in style as it might be, it might have helped to put some kind of “10 years later…” title card or such to ease the transition. Even though we never see Anakin as a child, it’s still odd to then jump to the adult Anakin with Obi-Wan, the latter of whom is clearly meant to be several years older than in the scene before (and has grown a beard and has longer hair!). The Phantom Menace is the most severely affected, as pretty much the entire film is cut out save a shorter version of the classic Darth Maul lightsaber battle, which opens the entire story, and Obi-Wan’s promises to Qui-Gon (and then Yoda) that he will train Anakin. Grace’s take on Star Wars is an incredibly streamlined version of the prequels storyline, condensing all three films into an 85-minute running time.

I felt like one of the reasons for the one time only nature of the screening (beyond copyright and not intending to profit off of his version in any way) comes from Grace simply wanting this new screening series idea of his to be seen as a fun, “Check out this alternate version” take on beloved movies, rather than any “This version is way better and should replace the other” attitude. This is actually the first in a series of these screenings Grace plans – he revealed he is working on a re-edit of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, using the different versions of that film, but then wants to hand off the baton and for other people to try their hand at re-edits of movies. As the movie begins, we get an establishing shot of a planet and then the city, and almost immediately we are watching Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon fight Darth Maul at the very end of Episode 1. He then offers a new beginning that says politicians are being targeted for assassination and it's up to the Jedi to set things right (or something like that). His version of the film has a new opening crawl asking people to forget about the prequels as you know them. Gone are the politics, General Grievous, Jar Jar Binks (except for one shot), the clone army, and about 99% of the first movie. His combined prequel trilogy moves quickly and omits huge chucks of story in favor of action and streamlining the narrative events of the prequels. While you may think there is no way to make the three films work as one coherent movie, Grace accomplished it with only a few minor flaws.
